| All in One (AIO) |
Same as a fitted nappy, but the waterproof cover is part of the nappy. |
| Bamboo |
Yarn made from the bamboo plant and then woven into a terry style
fabric. Very soft to touch, very absorbent, naturally antifungal and
antibacterial. Bamboo is a highly renewable resource and hence this
fabric is very environmentally friendly. |
| Booster |
Extra material used in any nappy to provide extra absorbency. |
| Cover |
A waterproof material which fits over a fitted nappy, prefold or traditional
terry square. Can also been known as "pilchers" or "wrap". |
| Fitted Nappy |
A shaped cloth nappy, generally with elastic around the legs and waist
which is made of an absorbent material. They are generally fastened
around the wais with snap or Velcro. Fitted nappies need a separate
waterproof cover. |
| Flannel |
Cotton which is densely woven and is brushed, making it very soft
to touch. |
| Fleece |
Soft synthetic fabric made from PET (Polyethylene terephthalate -
recycled plastic bottles). The material is Hydrophobic, meaning that
it does not absorb any liquid and remains dry to touch. |
| Hemp |
Hemp fibres woven to make a breathable fabric which is stronger and
more absorbent than cotton. Hemp has natural antifungal and antibacterial
properties. |
| Pocket Nappy |
A fitted waterproof cover with a lining, which forms a pocket to be
stuffed with any absorbent material or a specially made booster. These
nappies have no absorbency on their own, so must be stuffed. |
| PolyUrethane Laminate (PUL) |
Substance applied to a fabric to make it waterproof yet it remains
breathable. |
| Prefold |
Similar to a Terry Flat, but includes a sewn in central panel for
extra absorbency. |
| Sized Nappy |
Nappy comes in various sizes which need to be purchased as the child
grows. |
| Soaker |
A cover made from wool. |
| Terry |
Cotton fabric with loops, which is very soft and absorbs a large amount
of water. Commonly used in bathroom towels. |
| Terry Flats |
A square of Terry Toweling. They can be folded in a variety of different
ways (boy, girl, newborn, toddler etc) and fastened with pins or snappis.

| Velour |
Material which is knitted, providing a small amount of stretch, and
the appearance and feel of velvet. Generally 80% cotton, 20% polyester.

| Wool |
Lanolin contained within the wool makes it hydrophobic and hence moisture
proof while providing excellent breathability. |
| Liner |
Inner layer of a nappy which can washable or disposable, reducing
the moisture touching the skin, and providing a layer to catch most
of the mess. |
| Snappi |
A plastic fastener used to hold together a nappy around the waist.
Also known as "Nappi Nippa" |
| Wicking |
Process of moisture moving up or through a fabric. For example if
you hold just a corner of a towel in the bath, the water wicks up the
towel making the whole towel wet, not just the corner in the bath. |
